So far this summer I’ve been focusing on two commission pieces. While I sit and enjoy weaving these exciting pieces, I am surrounded by beckoning fiber. Their siren song is strong and compelling. So today I let them tell me what they imagine being. What a lovely break!

This soft bamboo yarn is the first to capture my attention. I start with the balls of sherbet color color strands. And on my bamboo shelf, I found the best complimentary solid color to use. I want a wide warp of colors here, with solid color for the pattern.

The next thing to capture my imagination was two hand dyed hanks of merino wool dyed in a stunning oil slick palette. Squishy soft. The solid plum hued hank was in there, along with a charcoal one. I am thinking of doing the warp with the oil slick hanks and then one warp with the plum and one with the charcoal. Just to see how the two shades bring out the best in the colors.

I ended my foray today into listening to my fibers show me possibilities with this stunning mix. As if the turquoise/teal/plum/violet colors weren’t speaking enough on their own, it’s the fiber content that got me wanting to create something special. The hand dyed Hank in the middle and the two cones in the back are 100% cashmere. The two cones underneath are 100% silk. This is going to be super luxurious. The warp needs fiber that can stay together under tension. That will be the two colors of silk since the cashmere is too fragile as a single strand. I’m envisioning squares in abstract patterns.
Now that I have three groupings ready for design, my happy place is going to be designing patterns worthy of the songs they sang for me today!
